Ella Harmon is a multifaceted director whose work spans documentaries, fashion, and music videos. As a for-hire director, Ella approaches each project on its own terms, prioritizing character development and authenticity. As an independent artist, Ella works at the margins of documentary film, merging narrative techniques with documentary research as a means of calling attention to their role in an active process of truth construction. Ella is inspired by social change, the rhythms of everyday life, and cinema's capacity to connect seemingly desperate lives.
Ella holds an MFA in Documentary Media with a Certificate in Critical Theory from Northwestern University and has studied Film and Philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College and Oxford University. This academic background informs Ella’s richly layered approach to storytelling. Ella's work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Latina Magazine, and Movie Maker Magazine, and has been showcased at film festivals globally, including the Chicago Underground Film Festival, Tacoma Film Festival, and Nefiltravanae Kino.
In addition to directing, Ella offers expertise as a cinematographer, editor, and colorist, contributing technical depth and visual integrity to every project. In a prior life, Ella also worked as a producer and production coordinator, giving them a holistic perspective on the production process.
